We Have a Golf Course That's Sure to be Perfect for You!

If you appreciate a more traditional tree-lined course then play the Old Course. The greens are small and flat and water is nonexistent. If however, you prefer more generous fairways, plenty of water, and large undulating greens, then the New Course is for you. We have a golf course that is sure to be perfect for you! There is a traditional way to set up a golf course and then there's the new way of thinking about golf course design. Each has its merits.

We couldn't decide between old or new so we've got both at Hidden Lake Golf Club!

While they are two very different courses, neither one is better than the other. They are rated roughly the same so you will want to do what a lot of our golfers do - play the Old one day and the New the next! Right along with our two championship courses, we have a complete practice facility and the largest, best-stocked Golf Shop in the area!

The courses feature bentgrass greens and the fairways feature a mix of "blue grasses." But you'll never get the blues playing here, as we maintain all 36 holes to a championship calibre of playing condition. We aerate in the Fall, when the number of golfers (and the temperature) drops. Strategically built on a sandy loam, the snow melts quickly and the course topography is designed to flow into Lake Medad - the "Hidden Lake" that gives us our name.

First up: The Old Course.

As the name implies, the Old Course is a throwback to bygone golf. The Old Course follows much of its original routing. The addition of tournament tees, strategically-placed bunkers, and extensive tree planting have immensely improved the course and"toughened it up". This course certainly deserves it's championship-calibre billing. Measuring 6,712 yards, the golf course is very mature and features lush, tree-lined fairways and small greens. The par-4, first hole is indicative of what you can expect to encounter on the Old Course. Trees line either side of the fairway extending 397 yards to a frugal, bunker-protected green.

The Old Course features four, par-5s all of which measure 500 yards or more. The 541-yard, #6 is one of the longest and arguably the most difficult hole on the Old Course. A sharp dogleg right you must strategically play for position by veering to the left-centre of the fairway. If you're considering reaching the green in two, you better cut the right corner and carry the cluster of trees that line this side of the fairway. Should you decide to play more conservatively leave yourself a full wedge to hold the undulating green. The back nine begins with another formidable par-5. The 548-yard, #10 hole requires you to split the fairway off the tee and later position yourself to the right of the 150-yard marker as maple trees guard the corner of this sharp dogleg left. The green is small and well guarded on the front left by two bunkers.

Ask any member to pick a hole that seems to stand apart from the rest, the overwhelming favourite seems to be the 185-yard, par-3, 14th hole. Despite its soothing appearance, this punishing par-3 requires perfection off the tee. Your approach is to a postage stamp-sized green situated atop a small embankment encircled by dense forest and a large hillside bunker. If you miss your target be prepared to record a double bogey or worse on your scorecard. The sixteenth and seventeenth holes are challenging par-4s that measure 395 and 419 yards respectively. Both holes provide you with a glimpse of the "hidden" lake through the trees that line the right side of the fairways.

The final hole on the Old Course is a straightforward 189-yard, par-3 that provides some relief to those who found the two previous holes overly severe. Proper club selection is crucial as there may be a two-club differential depending on the position of the flag stick and the intensity of the wind. Lake Medad, the ancient wintering grounds of the now-extinct Neutral Indians, comes into view on the finishing holes of the Old Course.

Hidden Lake features a half-way house on the course that is all the way in service! We have sausages, sandwiches and icy cold beer. Look for it - you'll pass it three times on the New Course; once on the Old.

The New Course

The New Course is the longer of the two courses.

Water comes into play on four holes, but it is the contoured greens that provide the real difference. The New Course is more of a target golf course. You must be constantly thinking about where you want to position yourself for your next shot. Numerous ponds, bunkers and long fescue grasses give the New Course a "links" style feel. It measures 6,645 yards.

Get through the first two holes on the New Course in even par and you are off to a marvelous start. Two back-to-back par-4's are as tough as they get, 468 yards and 459 yards from the back tees leave you with a long second shot to have a go at par.

Number seven is the longest hole on the New Course, measuring a daunting 588 yards makes it virtually unreachable in two. This par-5, dogleg left also happens to be the most difficult hole on the course and deservingly so. Off the tee, your drive is straight away. It is from this point on that the hole displays its true character. The likelihood of recording a par hinges on the quality of your second shot. Length and accuracy are required otherwise you will have a clear approach to the wide and shallow green guarded by a small front bunker. Large trees can be found on either side of the green, and it is this that makes this the most difficult approach shot you will hit all day. Good luck on this hole!

The front nine concludes with the signature hole on the golf course.

The wind is usually a factor and is frequently against you on this 221-yard, par-3. Your approach is all carry - water guards the front of an undulating green. Extensive mounding lurks to the back of the hole providing the perfect location for three well-placed bunkers, leaving no alternative but to land your ball on the green.

On the back nine of the New Course, water figures in on three holes but nowhere as prominently as on the 509-yard, par-5, 14th hole. For this reason, #14 is rated the number one stroke hole. Off the tee, an expansive fairway awaits, lined by fescue down the entire right side. Reaching the green in two is possible, however, a large pond flows dangerously close to the front of the green. In addition to the pond, the bunkers and fescue further fortify this downward sloping green.

The eighteenth hole is a good finishing hole that provides one final, opportunity to record a birdie. The right side of the fairway is home to a nest of nasty little bunkers from which a decent tee shot will get you to the 200 yard marker. Should your tee shot be in the middle or left side of the fairway, there is an opening to the green between bunkers to run one up.

Both courses can be attacked from five different tee positions, offering you as much or as little course as you feel like tackling.
